North Asia |
North Asia is a large geographical region divided in very few countries. Their histories, cultures and governments are extremely varied, as is their human rights situation. In China, the giant of the region, government opponents and pro-democracy activists are commonly imprisoned and silenced. Catholics and followers of other minority religions are often persecuted. In North Korea, an absolutist dictatorship denies its citizens all civil and political rights. In South Korea, political activists are often imprisoned under the National Security law and subjected to mistreatment and even torture. In Taiwan and Japan, the application of the death penalty continues to be a problem. In Mongolia, arbitrary detention, mistreatment of prisoners and inhumane prison conditions abound. In this page, you can find information and links on human rights in the region. If you know of other resources, please let us know.
