Since the death of Gen. Abacha in June 1998, the human rights situation in Nigeria has improved considerably. Democracy has returned to the country, and with it the revocation of military decrees that provided for arbitrary detention and unfair trials. Political prisoners have been released, and executions have decreased - though they still continue. Prison conditions remain extremely poor, inter-ethnic violence has lead to many deaths, and corruption continues to be a large problem. The links in this page will lead you to reports and other information that further expound on the human rights situation in Nigeria
